La Moye Golf Club Clubhouse Renovation
The Clubhouse at La Moye Golf Club in Jersey is currently undergoing a £3.5 million renovation. The renovation project involves the complete redesign, refurbishment and extension of the existing clubhouse to bring the building infrastructure and interiors up to a modern quality and standard.
Work on the renovation started in July 2017 and is set to complete in July 2018. Work is being undertaken by main contractors Mitchells Buildings Contractors alongside JEBS and architects Axis Mason.
Discussing the renovation, Richard Cutler, General Manager at La Moye Golf Club said: “So far the vast majority of the mechanical, electrical and plumbing works are complete. The new roof is in place and the new entrance and lounge extension have been formed. External cladding has been fitted to sections of the building, which has transformed the look of the building when viewed from the golf course. The external cladding colour has been chosen to ensure that the building sits sympathetically in our natural surroundings.
“All works are close to completion with some second fix works, decoration and hard landscaping of external areas still to be done.”
The clubhouse will house a number of facilities. On the lower ground floor the building will be home to the men’s locker room, men’s showers, snooker room, stores, plant rooms and staff area. The ground floor houses the bar, lounge, lounge extension, dining room, terrace administration areas, meeting room, foyer, kitchen and ladies locker room. The upper floor has two residential apartments for staff.
La Moye Golf Club is situated within Jersey’s Costal National Park and is an area that has been given the highest level of protection from development. Consequently, the scheme had to demonstrate that there would be no impact to the surrounding landscape.
Richard added: “The clubhouse is located in the middle of our site at La Moye with the golf course surrounding it on all sides. The golf course has remained open and very busy throughout the project so it has been critical to ensure that the extent of the work site has been minimised to avoid encroachment onto the golf course, as well as being properly fenced off to keep everyone safe. Careful planning was needed to ensure that all site vehicles are parked appropriately and all golf course parking is kept to the assigned areas. In addition, our normal golf club operations have continued which has been made possible due to a facility share agreement with Les Creux Bowls Club. The arrangement has worked brilliantly well, we are very grateful to the bowlers for allowing us to take over their clubhouse. That said, with the Les Creux clubhouse located just under a mile away from the golf course, the movement of players between the venues has proved challenging on a few occasions!
“Many people told me that large refurbishments such as this rarely go exactly as planned and in some way that has proved true however the main progress has been good and the job should complete close to the 12 months originally envisaged. Works have gone more or less as planned.”
La Moye Golf Club is a private golf club located in Saint Brélade on the south-west coast of Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands. The original golf course at La Moye was laid out by George Boomer in 1902, who was the schoolmaster of future British Champions Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, as well as his son Aubrey. The course was redesigned by renowned golf course architect James Baird in the early 1930s and was reopened by Vardon. The course was virtually laid waste during the World War II occupation of Jersey by the German Army. Major renovations took place during the 1960s and 70s under the guidance of Henry Cotton with the site going on to host some of the world’s top golfers. The club has hosted several prestigious tournaments including the Rediffusion Tournament from 1963 to 1966, the Jersey Open on the European Tour between 1978 and 1995 and the Jersey Seniors Classic on the European Senior Tour since 1996.
“Our members and guests have watched the project progress as they have played golf and have noted the changes to the exterior of the building with some interest,” said Richard. “Very few people have seen inside the building yet but anticipation is definitely growing!
“La Moye members have invested significant sums in this project which represents a once in a generation opportunity to improve our clubhouse facility. Ensuring we have a building that functions properly from a practical perspective is obviously critical. Beyond that, having the chance to refresh the look and feel of the building, creating a modern, comfortable space where people will enjoy spending their precious leisure time is an opportunity not to be missed and one we must get right.”
