Axis Mason – Jersey Design Awards

Axis Mason is a diverse team of designers, place-makers, thinkers and collaborators, who engage with clients, listen to aspirations and provide innovative and effective deign solutions based on the team’s wealth of experience. Through strong leadership, Axis Mason balances efficient teamwork with an exciting approach to the creative processes to deliver outcomes that enrich people’s lives.

The company’s Jersey office has completed a number of noteworthy landscaping projects over the past few years, setting a high bar for innovation and creativity.

2019 proved to be yet another hugely successful year for Axis Mason, and this was reflected at the Jersey Design Awards 2019. A number of the company’s projects were recognised, including:

Pitt Street (Charing Cross) – Best landscape architecture project in relation to the built environment – (Leah Bliss/Siobhann Macleod/Axis Mason)

World War One Memorial by the Parade – Best art work in the public domain – (Siobhann Macleod/Axis Mason)

Sommerville House – Best interior – (Siobhann Macleod/Axis Mason)

Pitt Street (Charing Cross)

Axis Mason provided both architectural and landscape design services for the development of Pitt Street, also known as the Charing Cross redevelopment. It is a mixed-use scheme in the centre of St. Helier and crucial to the project was the transformation of an unsightly lane into a key pedestrian route and piece of public art.

Leah Bliss, Associate at Axis Mason Landscape, explained:

“We worked with the Co-op and a local public art advisor to conceive the design. In this case the artwork forms the fabric of the street itself. Bands of granite paving zig-zag down the lane and text engraving references key moments in the Jersey’s history to create an engaging timeline. Recessed lighting has also been programmed to send a pulse down the street to represent the flowing town brook (Le Grand Douet) that is culverted below the lane.”

This ‘River of Light’ installation completely transforms the entire length of Pitt Street, bringing the area to life through movement and light. This specially selected colour contrasting paving was hand laid to depict a continual moving stream, into which are embedded programmable colour changing LED lighting strips and text relating to the historical development of St. Helier over the last 1000 years. The installation is dynamic and responsive to Jersey’s diverse community and culture.

The project was hugely collaborative, conceived and delivered by a small collaborative team with close involvement with the client from the outset.

Sommerville House

Conveniently located in the north of St. Helier’s exciting regeneration area, Sommerville House is a creative and cultural office hub.

The building was previously a back of house bank facility, which had become neglected and run down. The new development work sought to strip back the spaces to the shells, revealing and maximising existing features such as double height spaces, roof lights and exposed structures.

It is now a multi-tenanted building hosting three creative companies covering the disciplines of architecture, art, engineering and creative technology. The interiors of Sommerville House were conceived by Axis Mason to present a cohesive whole identity whilst expressing the individual culture and aspirations of the different operations they house. The material palette chosen was aimed at demonstrating versatility of application and unexpected appropriations.

Local artists and craftsmen were utilised to execute finely constructed details such as bespoke tables, a metal plan display wall, flush power boxes and integrated furniture.

In addition to being a working studio environment, Sommerville House is open to the public as an art gallery and plays host to regular events. This includes DJ’s playing on the ‘stage’ and a craft brewery pop-up bar.
