The Poplars & William Knott buildings, Jersey

Highly Commended in the Jersey Design Awards 2019, The Poplars & William Knott buildings project at the Overdale hospital site in St Helier, Jersey, won praise for its “Well detailed interior with good use of bold colour and graphics, with particular attention to acoustics.”

The judges further noted that the design “Created an environment that evaded the typical institutional feel by being warm, inviting and appropriate for visiting children’s use, all whilst acknowledging that the works were done on a very tight budget.”

Designed by Elliott Design Partnership (EDP) and constructed by Hacquoil & Cook, for Jersey Property Holdings and Jerseys Department for Health, the project took three years from conception to completion. Mechanical and electrical consultants were Hartigans, structural engineers were Beaumont Structural, and quantity surveyors were Southern Projects.

The William Knott building is designed as a Child Development and therapy Centre, whilst The Poplars is a centre for Older Peoples Community Mental Health, incorporating a reception and clinic rooms, above which is a floor of administration space containing general offices, open plan desking and small kitchens for the department.

Dion Elliott, director of EDP said that the key interior design elements are similar across the two buildings, with bright colours being used in the William Knott building and similar, but slightly more subdued colours in The Poplars, more suited to the needs of dementia and other mental health care.

He added: “We have also introduced bold wall graphics to ‘humanise’ the design. Overall, we wanted to avoid an ‘institutional’ feel and to create a bright and relaxing environment.

“It was a very good project and went well, with the works taking just over a year on site.

“We were very pleased to receive the commendation – it is always nice to have our work recognised. We were particularly happy with the judges’ comments that we produced high quality interiors for varied end-users on a very tight budget.

“We would like to thank the client, Jersey Property Holdings, for the opportunity, as well as to extend thanks to the project team for their great efforts along the way.”
